In a recent session, the Palm Bay City Council addressed significant community developments, including the approval of a citywide ban on new cannabis dispensaries and the greenlighting of the expansive Everlands residential project.
Ban on New Cannabis Dispensaries
The Council passed the first reading of Ordinance 2026-13 with a 4-1 vote, aiming to prohibit the establishment of new cannabis dispensaries within city limits. Deputy Mayor Mike Jaffe, who sponsored the ordinance, highlighted that Florida’s state law preempts local zoning authority, leaving cities with limited options: either ban dispensaries outright or treat them as pharmacies without additional restrictions. Jaffe noted that Palm Bay currently hosts over 13 dispensaries. Councilman Mike Hammer cast the dissenting vote. Source
Approval of Everlands Residential Development
In the same meeting, the Council approved the Everlands West development package by a narrow 3-2 vote. This project encompasses a 1,198-acre residential development on the city’s western edge. The decision followed extensive deliberation, reflecting the project’s scale and potential impact on the community. Source
These decisions mark significant steps in Palm Bay’s ongoing development and regulatory landscape, with potential long-term effects on the city’s growth and community dynamics.
