Palm Bay’s ‘The Compound’: Addressing Community Concerns

Residents of Palm Bay have long expressed concerns about ‘The Compound,’ a nearly 3,000-acre undeveloped area originally intended for residential development in the 1980s. Over the years, this area has become associated with various criminal activities, including drug use, illegal racing, and more serious offenses.

Community activists have been vocal about the need for increased safety measures. Thomas Gaume, a local community leader, highlighted the cyclical nature of the problem, stating, “We’ll send out more police to do patrols out there when the trespassers and everyone’s doing things out there. It dissipates and then they go away for a while. And then the police go away and then it’s all back to the way it started.”

In response to these concerns, city officials have been exploring potential solutions. Mayor Robert has even reached out to prominent figures, seeking investment to develop the area and reduce its appeal for illicit activities.

The history of ‘The Compound’ is rooted in ambitious development plans that were halted due to the bankruptcy of the General Development Corporation in 1991. This left the area with paved roads and street signs but no residential structures, creating an environment susceptible to misuse.

As discussions continue, residents remain hopeful that collaborative efforts between the community and city officials will lead to effective strategies to transform ‘The Compound’ into a safe and productive space for Palm Bay.
